Twenty minutes later, the two culprits stood outside the principal's office. Steve was called in first while Jessica settled into one of the available chairs by the door, next to the secretary's desk.
Inside the office, Principal Carter fixed Steve with a steely gaze. "I am disappointed, Mr. Farber. Your behavior is absolutely inexcusable, bullying a young lady and taking her things. It's disgraceful."
"But that card is mine!" Steve blurted out desperately. He pointed at the band-aid on his cheek, displaying the bandage on his wrist in the process. "Besides, she attacked me first!"
Principal Carter's face remained cold. "I've looked this card over, and there's no reason why you should have such sensitive and slanderous information about a fellow student. This obviously belongs to her, and even if it doesn't, it ought to. As for her behavior, I will be having a separate talk with her to straighten out the matter, and she will be properly punished for her own actions. Right now, let's talk about this card. Are there any more of these floating around?"
Steve shook his head. "No. That's the only one."
"Good, it had better be. Did you make this?"
At this, Steve hesitated. Technically, he had created that particular card, but he did it using an existing card fragment, the origins of which he had no clue. "Uh, no."
Catching the slip, the principal's expression darkened further. "I believe you are lying, Mr. Farber. You did make this card, no doubt to malign Jessica's character in front of the rest of the student body. Now tell me again, did you make this card?"
Steve winced. If he said no a second time, he would be in bigger trouble. Slowly, he gave a resigned nod.
"I thought as much." The older man held up the card. "That is a cruel thing to do to someone, Mr. Farber, and I'm sure that much of the information listed here is simply untrue. Jessica is a fine young lady with a promising future to look forward to. She is polite, intelligent, and hard-working. And regardless of a certain physical abnormality which you so gleefully point out on this card, she chose to join the cheerleading squad and put her energy into being a positive role model rather than putting down others. You would do well to follow her example."
Out in the hall, Jessica suddenly sat up and adjusted her posture. Brushing her hair back into place, she contemplated her recent behavior with a certain level of disgust. How could she lose control like that? Even though she was dealing with rather unique challenges, she had to abide by a higher standard of behavior if she was going to inspire good behavior in others. Inwardly, she resolved to make a formal apology to the rest of her squad-mates at today's practice.
Meanwhile, Principal Carter was concluding his meeting with Steve. "And so, Mr. Farber, I am going to give you a month's detention and a note to your parents. I expect to see better conduct from you from this point on. Is that clear?"
Gritting his teeth, Steve mumbled, "Yes, sir." He could see that his fun with the card was over for now, if not forever.
"Right, then. You may now return to your classes. Remember, I'll be keeping an eye on you"
After the boy had left, Principal Carter told his secretary to send in Jessica. He set the card down, but avoided looking it over again. One scan of its shameful contents had been enough, and being a fair-minded principal, he had no intention of sullying his view of his students with immature gossip. Incidentally, this meant that he missed noticing that the card's information had altered.
