"At first," explained the reporter, "it was discovered that exposure to the golden rays of the sun makes women of the right age pregnant. Soon the details followed. The rays of the sun transform; they don't create mass. So women only become pregnant if they weigh enough more than average that the extra weight can be used up to make them pregnant,"
They played a clip of one reporter. She was fat enough for it to be noticeable--at least fifteen pounds more than she should have been. Suddenly she clutched her hands to her chest and twisted around, falling onto a chair. As she sat there, she grew visibly thinner as the mass moved to her belly, which bulged out more and more. She moaned and opened up her blouse and pants to make room. Then she put her hand on her belly. "I can feel it..." she said. "It's kicking! I'm going to be a mother, if you can believe it!"
"This footage was taken," explained the reporter, "when one of our own, Ms. ____, was accidentally exposed to the sun and there was a chance to get pictures. Much is still unknown about this strange effect and much has already been discovered. The effect needs a lot of extra weight to work, so nobody becomes two days pregnant from being a half an ounce overweight. The exact limit is unknown, but is several pounds at least. Scientists do warn women who are just under the limit not to eat one more ounce and end up just over.
"The effects of having more excess weight than the weight of one baby varies. Some women have had multiple births. Some gave birth to children older than newborns--one woman, 50 pounds overweight, safely gave birth to a normal 7 year old. And some just lose one baby's worth of extra weight and can get pregnant again, using up more weight, if they go into the sun a second time.
"There are also reports of the occasional man being affected. All reports say the effect caused no lasting injury, though no pregnant women who are formerly men have been confirmed yet."
Jon ran up the stairs back to his bedroom. If the stone somehow changed the world, maybe it can change it back, he thought. "I wish that something else interesting happened instead."
No effect.
"I wish I knew why that didn't work." Horrified, Jon realized that the wish affected the sun because of a freak stellar alignment. The next chance to reverse it was in six months!
At least his family wasn't overweight. Or he didn't think so. Zoe was slightly thin. His mother was pretty normal, though he didn't exactly have access to her medical records--would he really notice being 6 or 7 pounds overweight if he's used to seeing her that way? But there were a few people. Gladys Brewer. Angela. Wendy Monroe. Leonard Drullers, if it really affects men. There was plenty of chance for this to have an effect.
