It's all in the balance.
I like that the story explores different ideas. It's a sandbox to explore existance in different perspectives even to the point of alien or god.
Maybe it is odd that things havnt become worse... But I strongly think that the tfs while somewhat random are not done without consideration on if that person can handle it. (Usually)
There's no hard fast rule saying a person must be depressed if a change happened. I actually don't like that anyway... A story is about a person doing something, reacting, in any measure they can. Usually that will always lead to something positive, because people are very creative in how they live.
And it helps that we don't get bogged down in sex (thankfully)
