Miss Fine was delighted. She might have been part of a bigger effort, but her individual efforts were certainly paying off.
Two girls entered her office. "Ah, you must be Tiffany Sanders and Sarah McMillan. I've been reading about you. You both have quite the reputations here."
She brought Sarah inside first.
"What am I doing here?" Sarah insisted.
"Just talking...there's nothing wrong with that," she said. "Is there?"
"I...guess not," Sarah said.
"I understand your father is the CEO of a company. And your mother is some sort of socialite."
As Miss Fine asked her questions, Sarah began to zone out, as if the questions were being answered by someone else...far away from her.
"They are never there for me. My father is always working, my mom....wants me to be like her. She's always out at parties. What I really want..is someone who loves me."
"What about your boyfriend?"
"Biff is great...but...I don't know..."
"You don't let him get close enough to see the real you...so you don't know if he really likes you. If anyone does.." Miss Fine said, softly.
"Yes," she mumbled.
"Well, you need to find that version of you. You are focused so much on the beauty on the outside that you aren't looking for what is beautiful inside."
"What do I do?"
"Focus on what is inside, Sarah. Not what is outside," she said, soothingly. "You'll find what it is. Why don't you go to your class? We can talk again tomorrow."
Sarah walked out of the room, still in a daze. She walked right past Tiffany and out the door.
"Tiffany, if you'd join me please?" She said.
