"Hi, Jon," Zoe said, entering the room before Katie could continue her religious questioning. He'd only seen her earlier that day, but she already looked different. A bit older, more like her current mother and less like him.
She offered him a soft drink.
"Hi," he said, nervously. He wasn't the best liar. He wasn't sure how he was going to avoid arousing suspicion.
"Mom, could you give us some privacy please? I mean...Jon and I want to talk."
Katie Shepherd frowned. "Sure, Zoe...I'll be right in the kitchen if you need me." She left them alone.
"I have one question for you," Zoe asked him after she left.
"What?"
"I...is this...some sort of date?"
Jon nearly did a spit take.
