"Come on, Lieutenant," Kendall said. "I trust that you realize the risks?" He said, as they headed toward the motor pool.
"Risks, sir? We're just going to town."
Kendall stopped, and looked at him. "Lieutenant, I asked for a man with no family for a reason. If whatever changed that man changes you...it will be easier on you with no connections."
Thompson gulped at that. "Into what, exactly?"
"Depends on the source, but reality within Lake Point is changing. To them, Rogers is a part of their existence. To us, he is a non-person. Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed...therefore, something caused him to change into the person he is right now."
He handed the lieutenant a pendant. "Put this on under your shirt and do not take it off. It won't protect you fully, but..you won't lose yourself. Of course, if this force is that powerful, then it may overwhelm it, in which case we are gone."
"Gone..."
"We would adopt the memories of the new reality. We would forget Rogers was not supposed to be here, forget the mission." He shrugged. "This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. Reality isn't always as stable as people think."
"You are serious?"
"Deadly," Kendall said. And he was. "We have to cut this off at the source, but it is like looking for a needle in a haystack when you don't know what the needle looks like."
