"Look what you made me do," she said as they came closer.
"Who was that?"
Nadine looked in the direction Laura had escaped in. "It's complicated," she said. What was? she asked herself, still uncertain. She hoped Laura would be all right. Even though they hadn't seen each other in a long while...
She looked up at the stranger. "Come inside, I think I need to make some tea and calm down."
"What is it with you British and tea?" The stranger asked.
"What is it with you Americans and some of your habits?" Nadine said, sounding more British with each passing second. "Besides, I've lived here long enough. I am a citizen."
She filled an electric kettle and plugged it in and sat in the living room. "That would be Laura," she said. "I had hoped she would stay."
"Laura?"
"My only family. As you might have noticed, we don't have much in common. She goes by Quill, nowadays, if you can believe that. She looked at the stranger, who was seeming more and more familiar with every moment.
The stranger looked back at her, equally confused. This felt like a normal conversation, but...they'd barely spoken to Nadine before...why did it seem like they were good friends?
