"At least she said sorry," Jennifer said. "I don't know who is worse ... the cheerleaders or the Goths. They both treat anyone who isn't one of them like dirt." She looked at Jon, who was looking at one of the Goth girls with a strange gaze, then pulled him with her down the hallway.
"That's Nadine," Jon said.
"Yeah? So?"
"She's not a Goth," he said.
"Could have fooled me," Jennifer said.
"No, wait," Jon said, stopping. "There's something weird going on. I ... I need to find ... Karyn."
"Karyn? Who's Karyn?"
Jon paused for a moment. "I'm not sure." He laughed. "I don't even know where I got that name from." He shook his head, feeling a little silly. Then they both continued down the hall.
"Nadine?" Stephanie asked, waving her hand in front of her friend's face. She had an odd gaze, but now it was gone.
"What am I doing? I can't be seen like this. What if one of my friends sees me?" she said aloud.
"Nadine, I'm your friend. And there's nothing wrong with what you're wearing."
Nadine sneered at the Goth girl. "You are not my friend, you Satanic freak!" she yelled, before dashing down the hall.
Stephanie was shocked. What the fuck was wrong with Nadine? Had she completely lost her mind?
Nadine turned the corner and ran down another hall, before stopping dead in her tracks. What the fuck was she doing? Did she just call her best friend of seven years "a freak"? But she wasn't her friend, was she? Her friends weren't Goths. They were Baptists. No, that wasn't right. Or was it? She shook her head. She was so confused.
