The pawn shop wasn't too far away from the motel, so it was an easy enough walk, despite the fact that her heels were still killing her. What she wouldn't give for some more comfortable shoes.
She opened the door that led into the pawn shop and met with the guy behind the counter. They knew each other. His name was Nick. Despite the fact that he had been her client now and again, she regularly pawned items there. So it wasn't a surprise for this guy to see her.
"What do you have today?" he asked.
"This," she said, slamming the stone down on the counter.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" he asked. "It's just a rock."
"It was important to the kid I got it from."
"Kid? What is it? His fucking pet rock? Come on, Mindy. I'm running a legitimate business here."
"You are?" she asked.
Nick grunted. "Fine, I'll buy your rock." He opened the cash register and grabbed a couple of bucks, then threw them towards Mindy. She grabbed them, then left.
What Nick didn't realize was that he just got a bargain. Big time.
