Just at that moment, the hotel room door opened and someone walked in. Jane turned and saw that it was her boss Gary Fiennes!
"Is this some kind of joke?" she asked him.
"What? Didn't I give you the right amount?"
"Excuse me?"
"It's a hundred an hour, right?" he asked.
"What are you talking about?" Jane asked, both confused and impatient.
"That's your rate. And I paid you accordingly."
Jane's attention drifted towards a purse sitting on a nearby table. She picked it up and reached inside. Then she pulled out a wad of cash. Five hundred dollars! "500?"
"Yeah, we fucked for five hours. So that's five hundred dollars. And man, was it worth it," he added with a smile.
Jane turned towards him with wide eyes. He said that so calmly, like it was just a matter of fact. Could she really have had sex with him and not known it?
No! This must have been some sort of sick joke.
"Listen, Gary. I think this joke has gone too far. What would Darcy say?"
"Darcy?"
"Yeah, your wife. What would she say if she saw you and me in this hotel room like this?" Jane asked. "She'd leave you for good." It had been nagging Jane for a while at the law office where she worked at as a secretary. Gary was the leading lawyer at the firm, but he was also her boss, so she was able to pick up enough of his conversations to know that he was cheating on his wife, possibly with hookers. She had no real evidence of that, but she was sure that that was what was going on. It disgusted her that her boss would behave so inappropriately and she was thinking of quitting on just that basis. But she really needed that job. Where else could she be paid just as much with her qualifications? It pained her to keep working there, knowing that Gary was cheating on Darcy, but she felt like she had no choice.
And now there was this. Did Gary think this was funny? Well, it wasn't. And if his wife were here, she wouldn't think so either.
"Jane," Gary said, sitting down in one of the chairs, looking quite concerned. "Don't you remember? Darcy ..."
