Athena felt very practical about the whole thing, and a little bit angry. She had called Nadine a devil worshiper, and she knew that wasn't right, not because she didn't do that, because of how magic actually worked, things she knew, but because that was a silly idea. How rediculous to think that magic could exist, only a fool would give them selves over to that. So while she felt that calling Nadine a devil worshiper was the wrong thing to do, she did feel that she was at the very least right for putting her in her place.
Athena got dressed and as she did so she felt very practical. Very grounded. This was a new leaf, and she could much better spend her time now that she had left all that troublesome and foolish magic behind her. Maybe she would go into accounting, or Human Resources one day, or take up useful hobby like knitting. She wore a white top, pants, and senisable shoes.
Downstairs she found her mother, who she was surprised to find was speaking French on the phone to someone, while she absentmindedly twirled her hair about her finger. They had family in France, but they were astranged from them, they were rude, gossips, and overly dramatic. Her mother hated them, but now she couldn't stop talking to them. Her mother hung up the phone.
"Oh, Athena! You won't believe what your cousin has gotten himself into, well of course you know that he was sleeping with a Belgian of all people, well it gets worse! You see..." she kept talking, almost with a French accent which she hadn't had before, but Athena began to tune out, didn't her mother know it was rude to gossip? And why was she talking so loud and waving her arms about. It vexed Athena but she said nothing for the first minute. Then finally the damn broke.
"Well maybe they shouldn't all be sleeping together then! I mean, god, is it so hard to wear a condom! I bet you they all have diseases you know! And why are you being so dramatic, it's none of your bussiness, and I sure as hell don't care."
This shocked her mother, who felt that everyone should know everything about anything, particularly if it was personal, and preferably in French if it could be helped.
Athena walked out of the house, after yet another fight. Why couldn't people be better, would be the thing she would say over and over for the rest of the day. It was so disappointing.
