Slowly, but confidently, Karyn began participating more and more in the conversation. Suddenly, she found, she had an opinion on whether Coach Barry was making the cheerleaders do too many drills. She found that she had something to say about the most recent episode of Great British Bake-Off. She discovered that he was an authority on the sale that Sephora had been running for the last week.
And by the time the girls had flipped sides two more times, giving both their fronts and backs two 15-minute turns, Karyn found that she was talking more than anyone. She had invited everyone over, after all.
The girls stood up, feeling refreshed, and began putting their clothes back on, when Melissa froze in place for just a moment. It was like you could see the lightbulb going off in her head.
"Hey Karyn, why don't we go up to your room for a bit?"
"What?" Karyn had invited these girls over to sunbathe, and she felt sure about that, but in her head that should have been where the interaction ended.
"Yeah," Melody added, "you've got so much stuff up there, I'm sure we could make use of some of it."
Now it was Karyn's turn to freeze. More tracks re-routing in her brain. She needed to make use out of everything in her room.
She needed to make use out of everything in her room.
When the gears started back up again only a moment later, Karyn's face was bright enough to rival Lucy's. "You know what? That sounds like a great idea."
And after rolling up her own towel, she lead the girls inside and upstairs.
