Officer Kurt Maybourn threw Joseph McCarty into the jail cell and closed the door. From the viewpoint of an observer, it would have looked strange, since Kurt looked like small boy and Joe looked like an adult woman. But, as most people in town now knew, looks could be deceiving.
Joe grabbed the bars and spit at Kurt. "When I get out of here, I'm gonna fucking kill you!" he yelled.
Kurt ignored him and left the lockup area. When he got back to his desk, he sat down and sighed. This phenomenon thing made things a lot tougher. A prison break was bad enough. But now they had to take this body swapping thing into consideration. Normal everyday people could have been prisoners, for all they knew. And prisoners could have been normal everyday people.
He heard a man chuckling and looked up. He saw a chubby man wearing an ill-fitting police uniform. The captain had informed him that this chubby middle-aged balding man was actually his partner Danielle Chase. It was so strange seeing her like this.
"What's so funny?" he asked her.
"You. You're a cute kid."
"And you're a fat slob," Kurt said.
Suddenly, someone coughed and said "Can I have your attention?" Everyone turned and saw a mammoth of a woman, probably weighing about 300 pounds. It was the captain. He had swapped with this woman almost an hour ago.
"As you know, we have captured one of the fugitives, thanks to some brilliant work by Officer Kurt Maybourn. But there are still many that are still on the loose. We need to find these people and lock them back up, before they disappear completely. And with new identities, it's easier than ever for them to do it."
Kurt turned back towards his partner. "Peter Wagner, Brick Harrison, Rex Turner. These guys are all cutthroat killers. And they could be right here under our noses and we wouldn't even know it."
"Yeah. I know," Danielle said.
"At least Vic Rudolph is still locked up. I can't imagine that guy on the loose. Things might be ten times worse."
"Yeah," Danielle agreed. She looked thoughtful for a second, then said "You know, now that you mention that ..."
"Yeah?"
"Gary Fiennes. He was Vic's lawyer, right?"
"Yeah, I think so. Why?" Kurt asked.
"We just found his body. He was killed not too far from here. His secretary is still alive, but just barely."
"What are you getting at?" Kurt asked. "Vic is still locked up. Obviously, he didn't kill him."
"Yeah. I know. I just thought it was ... interesting. I mean, if Vic were out, one of his targets would be his lawyer, right? I mean, the way he screwed him over, that would make anyone mad."
"But Vic isn't out. We have confirmation of it."
Danielle shrugged her shoulders. "I just thought it was interesting." She grabbed a few papers and looked at them.
"Do you want to check it out?" Kurt asked. "Just to be sure? I mean, there have been a lot of strange things happening today. There wouldn't be any harm in checking."
She shrugged again. "I don't know. I mean, I'm sure that Vic is still locked up. But ... I don't know. Something doesn't feel right."
"We'll check it out," Kurt said, standing up from his desk. "Come on. Better to be safe than sorry."
And then they both left for the John Wilson Penitentiary.
