Jennifer wandered around the room, looking at people. She felt better than many of them, especially the homely women. It was easy to slip into the mindset she'd been given, but she was still aware of being Jon on some level.
The fact that wishes made one slightly out of tune with changes had helped her keep part of herself more in control. Many people at the event were in control. People of similar ages were most likely to be. But those who suddenly had the mind of a child were unable to function at any higher level, even if they did remember it. And some children, given adulthood, were overwhelmed by new feelings and thoughts.
While these truths were by no means absolute, it was why choices were usually made carefully by people, not by mischief makers. Everyone was unprepared for the changes, thus creating more adaptation problems.
She spotted Jon's parents, chatting separately with others, clearly taking this seriously. It was hard thinking of them as her parents. After all, she was nearly the same age.
