Mary's natural curiosity took over and she chose to not tell Karas about the changes she now found Karas going through. This level of magic rarely witnessed by someone of her humble background. Born to a farmers who saw no need for learning outside their trade. She grew up with little formal magical training receiving most of it from a wizened woman who lived on the outskirts of Shadowbrook. In return for doing chores for the woman she would take some time teaching Mary simple magical tricks or potions. An eager student but her teacher lacked the ability and books to properly train her.
Helena, Mary's teacher failed in her magical apprenticeship. A subject Helena would never discuss. She left Mary with great gaps in her knowledge of magic. Disappearing part way through her training, Mary made due with the few books that Helena left behind in what appeared a hurried departure. Mary developed a good understanding of plants and herbs which she felt made her a better than fair potion maker. But her spell casting remained unreliable at best. She only used it with no one around for safety.
Mary hoped on their journey to a bigger city there might be a magic shop that she could obtain tomes to increase her knowledge and fill out her education. With her son grown and beloved husband passed she felt at leisure to pursue magic again. Karas's arrival again excited the old passion for it. Never observing such powerful magic worked on someone she found it fascinating. She hemmed Karas's dress quickly and got a horse fixed up to her wagon.
The sturdy wagon hand carved by Mary's son sat mostly unused. Mary gave it a quick dusting that morning before loading the supplies she thought they might need. She helped Karas onto the wagon who struggled to get up unsuccessfully. They set off to Jarren's outpost a bigger town which got its name from an adventurer who settled there more than a century ago. It now stood as a trading hub for the local villages. Mary figured they would reach it before nightfall and stay at an inn there.
