I needed to go to the city and get the Staff of Sparks and something to have it appease the dragon. When I got there, I was able to get in easily enough. I was on my own for speed and ease. When I asked around, I was able to get a Staff of Sparks. I was also as able to get a Staff of Tremors. That should be enough for the dragon. People were looking at me as I moved about. As I was walking, a young woman stood in my path. "This is not your lucky day, you damn harpy. Prepare to die for your many sins against the Shadow Brotherhood!" she then drew her blade and attacked me. I shot a ice spike at her and impaled her through the chest. She went down and I finished her off with my master sword. She had a look of disbelief. Another three assassin's came running to me from the assembled crowd. I just shook my head. I began cutting them down before a crossbow bolt was shot at me. I dodged it and looked around. I could not see them anywhere, and I was not going to stay around to find them. I had killed an assassin on the island. I also had amassed many enemies in my time.
Since I had no need to stay, I left the city. No more assassins attacked me on the street. That did not mean that I was done with them. Assassin guilds, even the NPC run ones, did not stop until the target was killed. It just meant that they knew they could not take me on with their strength. Stronger and stronger NPC assassins would be spawned and dispatched to kill me eventually. If any Players were in the guilds, they could come after me if they took on the job. If they failed it would be taken from them. It was made to be a challenge to higher tiered characters that were not Devils to keep them in check. Even if they were the strongest Player in their regions, Boss tier strong assassins with a variety of skills and weapons would chase after and appear before them at all hours of the day. That was a part of the developer's blog. There were actually many guilds that operated. They had at least one in each country. Sometimes they could even collaborate to keep strong characters from simply moving to escape. I was not looking forward to being ambushed, but there was nothing I could do.
Now out of the city and on my own, I made my way to the fort with the villager on horseback. The sand dunes in the scenery really were beautiful. I made sure that he did all of his chores correctly. Abel told me that he was good while I was gone. When he was done, I just moved him to the next fort for even more chores to complete. It took him five days for him to finish up in each fort. By the time he was done with the third fort, he was given nine gold. I let him keep the ninth coin for himself. He did not look all that grateful. It was understandable. It was a job worth several gold coins. That was enough to take back to the dragon. He was glad to have it over with. While I did not let anyone interfere with his work, I did see some of the recruits mock and belittle him a bit. "This is what a real honest day's work is like." Zeta told him as he complained to me. "Does than mean I can join you guys then?" he demanded. We thought about it for a second. "Let's settle your debts with that dragon first." I said. He just sighed in defeat. I let him on the back of my horse as I took four of the recruits with me.
