The chill in the room prompted Jon to make a very quick change from his own clothes into the light blue scrubs. At first he was going to leave his underwear on but then seeing which parts of the scrubs were marked in black he took them off as well.
The entire hip and groin area of the pants from his belly button down to the top part of his thighs were colored black. He was getting more nervous by the second thinking about what copying and pasting this area of his body would mean. There was no backing out now. Maybe if he was lucky he would be the "copy" and not the "paste", though with his luck it seemed unlikely.
'Might as well get this over with' Jon thought as he unscrewed the top of the jar containing the ointment. 'Yuck, this stuff stinks. It smells like ammonia, dirty gym socks and a skunk got into a fight at a fertilizer plant and nobody won.' Chuckling at that mental image Jon began applying the ointment being very careful not to "color outside the lines" as it were.
When he was done Jon stepped around the curtain blocking off the changing area and back into the laboratory proper. Tiffany was already there and from what Jon could see her scrubs were marked in the same general area that his were.
"Wonderful! Now that you are both ready I must ask fraulein Sarah and fraulein Karyn to step out and please wait for us in the lounge. We wouldn't want anything to go wrong at this point in our experiments now would we?" Dr. von Schtupple said making shooing motions at the two young women.
As the door closed the Doctor turned back to his two subjects. "So as you can see today we will be doing something a bit more interesting, and a bit more drastic. To be completely fair I think we should flip a coin to see who gets to play which part in our little experiment. Sound good to the two of you? Good." he said not waiting for either of them to answer.
The Doctor pulled out a large gold colored coin that Jon didn't recognize. "I have here a very special coin. It is a German gold mark minted in 1900. It was given to my grandfather but his mother just before he went to fight in world war one. He gave it to my father in 1939 when he joined the German army. My father gave it to me the night before I left Berlin to come to America. This coin has always brought luck to men of my family." Jon could see the old man getting lost in a nostalgic haze as he told his story. With an odd little startled jerk as if he had forgotten that there were other people in the room he cleared his throat and said "Now fraulein if you would please call heads or tails while the coin is it in the air."
As he flipped the coin Tiffany called out "Heads!"
With quick hands the Doctor caught the coin out of the air and slapped it to the back of his arm. Peeking at the coin before showing it to the two of them the Doctor smiled "I was hoping it might turn out this way." Jon and Tiffany both pressed close to see the coin that would seal the fate of one of them.
