"Brenda, what's going on?" Bobby asked, suddenly.
Trevor turned. "You just called her Brenda," he said.
Brenda sighed. "Another change. I guess I look more like one than I did before," she said, stroking Mary's hair.
"Aren't you scared?" Bobby asked.
"I've moved past scared," she said. "Into just wanting it to stop no matter what happens. I'm not even sure I'm not imagining all this. Maybe I really am someone's mommy."
"The bestest Mommy," Mary declared, obliviously.
They all heard the sound of the front door opening. Trevor and Bobby ran out of the room into the living room.
Brenda paused for a moment. "We're comfortable," she said. "And we don't have to worry too much about bills." She waited, hoping that would come true. At least she could survive.
