An hour later, Liam pulled the car into the At Home parking lot. Again, there were lots of people already here as they seemed to have the same idea. They struggled to find a parking space but got lucky as they spotted a family just about to leave.

“Alright, honey,” Liam began as they got out and locked the car up. “This is normally your area of expertise, so I’ll let you get the materials that we need.” Rose nodded, took Kiera’s hand and led them into the store.

As they made their way through the store, Jonchelle saw more people that she recognized than she thought she would. Of course, she sometimes had to do a double take in order to figure out who they were. It was going to be more than a little confusing when school came around.

One of the people that she recognized was Biff Meadows, the school’s quarterback. Jonchelle had to stifle a giggle when she saw the tall, muscular boy dressed in a miniskirt and a tank top. It looked like she had similar fashion sense to her girlfriend, Sarah McMillan. Jonchelle was surprised though that Biff seemed to be really into it. She thought that he might have been like Karyn and would've refused to take part, but here she was, buying pink paint for her bedroom along with her family.

Speaking of Karyn, once they had gathered all of the supplies that they needed and headed towards the checkout line, the Gibsons bumped into her parents, Edward and Bethany, although they now introduced themselves as Dannabelle and Mark.

Jonchelle frowned. She couldn’t see any signs of the stereotypical trucker or hooker descriptions that Karyn had mentioned on the phone. Sure, Mark was wearing a red and black flannel shirt and a pair of shorts, but that just meant that he was an outdoorsy type of person. Dannabelle was wearing a brown turtleneck sweater tucked in a white patterned skirt, plus a pair of black, leather knee-high boots.

“Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Black,” Jonchelle piped up once she recognized who they were. Dannabelle gave a deep giggle.

“Actually, we’ve decided to go by Mark’s last name, Kirk.”

“Oh, that’s a great idea,” Liam, exclaimed as he turned towards his wife. “Honey, why don’t we do that?”

Rose seemed a little hesitant. “I don’t know honey. Do we really have to go that far? I mean, we’re only doing this for a year, aren’t we?”

Dannabelle nodded. “It’s a big decision, I know, and even now we’re not sure if we’re going to be doing this for the whole year. But I thought that, since we are doing it, why not go the whole nine yards?”

“How’s Karyn taking it?” Jonchelle asked, knowing pretty much how well she was handling it.

Dannabelle shook her head. “Not great, the poor thing. I mean, he practically called me a hooker when he saw what I was wearing yesterday. I don’t understand why he isn’t taking part, everyone else is.”

Jonchelle nodded. “I know…” She paused briefly. “He was pretty mean to me about it as well on the phone last night. I’m quite surprised actually. It’s not like him to be so against anything.” It felt a little odd calling Karyn a boy, but it made sense, since she currently dressed more like a boy than a girl.

“Oh, honey. I’m really sorry about that.” Mrs. Kirk apologized.

Jonchelle shook her head. “It’s okay, really, because I made a friend out of this. She actually helped me put this outfit together actually.”

Mrs. Kirk smiled. “That’s great! I love that sweater, by the way. It’s cute.”

“Thanks! You look good too...and not at all like a hooker.”

Mrs. Kirk laughed. “That’s sweet of you to say, dear.” She turned her attention back to the rest of the family. “Roger, Mikey you look great as well. Although, I suppose that you all have new names as well?”

Rose nodded and reintroduced themselves.

“Oh and Zoe goes by Zachary now. You should see him… By the end of the year, he’s going to be a hunk.”

“Ooh, I can’t wait to meet him.”

Liam, getting bored of this conversation, looked at his watch.

“Well, we’d better be off, I suppose. Got to get started on that decorating,” he declared, gesturing toward a cart full of paint cans and a few pieces of furniture.

“Of course, don’t let us keep you. Let’s get together sometime, New Year’s Eve was great.”

Liam nodded and they made arrangements to meet up again later in the month. Eventually, they returned to their car and loaded it up with their new purchases. They had also arranged for delivery of some of the big items, like a vanity table that Jonchelle had seen.

Jonchelle was excited. She couldn’t wait to get started on her new room.
