Derek was a guy, just to his family he wasn't a very good one. His father worked in a blue collar job, not because he was poor but because he liked working with his hands. His wife, Derek's mother, was from old money, and it allowed him to do as he wanted with his life which was nice. Derek on the other hand didn't get along with his family, they wanted things of him and he didn't want to give them to them. He didn't like going to society events or camping with his dad, because that's not what he wanted to do. Not because he didn't like those things, but because it was his life, and he wanted to make his own choices. So he rebelled, he got pierced his nose, dyed his hair, just to have some control over his life and who he was.
Delia was girl, she just wasn't very good at it. Her family came from old money on her mother's side, her great great grand mother had been Lady Rochester de Blanc, a member of the British aristocracy who had come to America during the war and stayed, in an attempt to civilize the americas and bring some british charm, she was also very very rich. Her mother never let her forget this heritage, her mother had been all the right things, a right proper lady, a cheerleader in high school and college, on the honor roll, ect, ect. Delia had the same problem as Derek did, but now with her mother, rather than her father, who was still the same, but now more distant, she was her mothers project. So it was that she was here, at cheerleader try outs at the behest of her mother.
It wasn't that she didn't want to be popular or even a cheerleader, it that it wasn't on her terms, so she dyed her hair and got piercings on her lips, she tried to be a punk. She would have loved to have been a punk or an emo or a nerd, anything but herself, but the money from her family did make her life very comfortable....
The magic didn't want to waste a lot of energy on Derek so a simple change had been enacted, it was enough, the rest would be like snow melting off a hillside in spring.
