Leanne was so happy to hear that Alyssa Campanella had won Miss America. It gave her a shot. It wasn't that Alyssa was her body type, which she was which was good, because that set a standard for the other pageants. It was that Alyssa was a geek, the girl knew her star wars. And it was this fact that gave Leanne, a former overweight geek guy, hope of being the best most beautiful girl she could be, and still hold on to part of her old self. She wanted a reason to stay with Jay.
Jay was geeky, and a bit nerdy too. He was very smart, but he lacked common sense that made people attractive, he would forget to brush his teeth as often as he should, would be fine with his mother cutting his hair even though she had lost some skill along the way. He had no clue what dressing to impress meant, and he didn't feel a need to know either. He was also funny, he had a dark wit about him, which he mainly used on himself as a way of deflecting abuse. He would always be fair better at making fun of himself than anyone else could be, and that meant they didn't try. Jay wasn't the type of guy who would be friends with, or date, the school beauty queen. It was too bad that he had been Leanne's best friend before her change.
Now things were different, she didn't have as much time as before for geekery since she was supposed to be working on her talent for the State Pageant, practicing for cheer leading, and working out, (as well as community service, which was part of being a beauty queen she found out one Saturday morning)
Jay didn't fit into her life, she didn't know what to do, and it made her sad.
The girls noticed, and together they came up with a plan. Athena said that she should change her talent, many girls could play an instrument, few could name every star wars character ever. She was going to bone up on her geek stuff, master it, and Jay was going to help her. She was going to not only be the most beautiful girl in the room, she was going to be the geekiest. Then when the pageant came, have books of geek knowledge, huge tomes of geekery, and be quizzed on it, she would have to know a tone, but lucky for her, she already did, she would just have to know a bit more, and prove it. This was her reason to be with Jay.
Then Karyn spoke up, if she wanted to be with Jay, why not wake him up to the fact that he could have the prettiest girl in town, and help him on the road to being worth that? In Karyn's mind, Jay was just the guy in town who needed the most tweaking, but didn't all guys?
So it was settled, of course Jay said yes, he would be a fool not to, and they spend their days together, learning about Doctor Who, Star Trek, Tron, and the full History of Middle Earth, all the while Leanne would give Jay little bits of advice on how to better his image (to which he would brush off with his little jokes, which made her giggle) It was the summer she always wanted.
