Jon was at his locker, opening it to put his school bag inside, when suddenly, he heard a loud high-pitched yell. It was the scream of a girl. He threw his school bag in his locker, shut the door, and ran around the corner towards the scream to see what happened.
Jay Duncan, and his friend Wallace were standing there. "It just...went off," he said, both looking at the confused and disoriented girl standing in front of them.
"What is it?" Jon said.
"It's the Status Quo Reverser," he said, gesturing to the machine.
"What does that even mean?"
"It works on certain theories of probability and the uncertainty principle," Jay said. "It is supposed to shake up people's lives...make things more interesting for them. I tested it yesterday on Wallace on a low setting, and Tiffany Sanders showed up at his house for tutoring." Wallace blushed at that.' But...the thing overloaded. I'm not sure what it did."
"Something improbable, no doubt," Wallace said.
"Why would you build it?" Jon asked.
"It is just proof of concept," Jay insisted. "It needs further testing. But I can prove that a machine can change your life."
"Change it how?"
"I haven't quite gotten that under control," Jay said. He looked over at the girl standing there, looking confused and disoriented.
"What's wrong with her?" Jon insisted. He moved to shake her. "Are you all right...?"
