'Geek Gun' was what the label on the strange ray gun said.
"Geek Gun?" Sarah said out loud. "This has to be some kind of joke!"
At first she thought maybe one of her friends had found it somewhere, thought it looked 'geeky' and slapped the label on it, but closer inspection made it clear the label came with the gun to start with.
Sarah was interrupted by Nicole Tiller, one of her closest friends from the cheerleading squad, and Biff Meadows, from the football team. "Sarah, what's going on?" Nicole asked.
"Where'd you get that thing?" Biff asked.
"I don't know what's going on, but I found this in my locker. It says 'Geek Gun'."
Biff laughed. "Of course it's a geek gun! It's in those comic books the geeks can't get enough of!"
"Sarah, how did that get in your locker?" Nicole asked.
"I don't know. I think someone's playing a trick on us. I think it's Jon and Karyn. They've both been acting really weird lately ... even for them." Sarah said.
Biff then opened his locker, which was not far away. "Hey, I found a ray gun too! What's this one say? 'Nerd gun'?"
He laughed. "Nerd gun! Yup, it's a nerd gun all right!"
"Geek gun, nerd gun?" Nicole asked. "What's the difference?"
"It doesn't matter." Sarah replied. "These things don't look like toys ... more like actual props they'd use in movies. But they're not real anyway."
Sarah's 'geek gun' was pointed at Nicole. "See? Nothing happens when I fire this." She pressed the trigger on the 'geek gun'. Much to everyone'e surprise, Nicole was, for one brief second, bathed in a strange yellow light.
The leggy cheerleader suddenly became dizzy for a moment, but then recovered. "Weird." Nicole said. "I'm remembering things ... all these things I never even gave a crap about before. I remember how many times Mr. Scott actually saved the Enterprise in the original Star Trek. And I know all these things ... did you know that half of the DC Universe's heroes used to live on an alternate Earth called Earth 2, but then the comic book editors thought that was too confusing for the new readers, so they made this REALLY confusing crisis to bring it all together. But it's still not as confusing as Neon Genesis Evangelion. What was UP with that ending?"
Nicole abruptly stopped herself. "All this anal-retentive knowledge and meaningless trivia ... I'm a geek!"
"You mean ... these things actually work?" Sarah exclaimed, not wanting to believe what she was saying.
"So, what does the Nerd Gun do?" Biff asked, pointing the gun randomly. It was at this point that Biff's football teammate Reggie approached.
"Hey, what's going on?" Reggie asked.
Sarah gasped, when she saw that Biff was briefly pointing the Nerd Gun at her. She rushed toward Biff, grabbing for the gun. The Nerd Gun suddenly went off, and a beam of light struck Reggie.
Reggie suddenly began to noticeably shrink, becoming less athletic and muscular in appearance. His clothes became baggy, and his face became pimply. Then his clothes changed altogether, becoming a white shirt with a pocket protector and plain pants. And he also wore glasses. His whole appearance was now a lot more nerdy.
Reggie moved forward, but tripped and fell. "Help... what's happened to me?" he asked.
Sarah, Nicole, and Biff just stared in shock.
