Karyn was taken to jail and processed as Maria Perez. She was given 1 phone call, and she called Jon in Bethany's body.
Jon had finished dinner and was in her new room studying when her phone rang. She picked it up, and said "This is J... I mean, this is Bethany Wilder, may I help you?" Jon still wasn't used to her high voice or her new name.
"Jon, you have to help me! It's Karyn, I was picked up by ICE tonight! They say my deportation hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, after which I'll be sent to Mexico!" Fear and desperation crept into her voice, but she lowered it to make sure no one else could hear. "You have to get to the stone tonight, make a wish and fix this!"
"Stone? What stone are you talking about Karyn?"
"What do you mean what stone? The magic wishing stone you got from your grandfather, the one that created this entire exchange program! Jon, you have to help me," Karyn whispered. Why didn't Jon remember the stone?
"I don't know anything about a stone, but I'll tell my, I mean Bethany's, father about this in the morning and see if there's something he can do to help," Jon replied.
"Jon, you must remember the stone," Karyn pleaded.
"Sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you sure your memories weren't messed up in the transfer? Maybe Rosaria believed in some magical wishing stone and you are picking up her thoughts?" Jon was confused, and worried about Karyn, she was sounding crazy... there was no such thing as magic wishing stones.
"No, I'm not confused! Look, just do what you can to get me out of here, and then we'll try and solve this!"
"Ok, don't worry Karyn, I will." Jon hung up, and worried about Karyn, found it impossible to concentrate on schoolwork anymore. Did the exchange have a chance of making a person insane? She'd never heard of such a thing, but maybe they covered it up to reassure people...
Jon decided to go to sleep so she could get up early tomorrow and talk to Bethany's dad... he still wasn't home, probably wouldn't be for hours. For the second time that day Jon began stripping out of Bethany's cheerleading uniform, this time to get ready for bed. She found a pink chemise that Bethany usually slept in and slipped it over her head. She washed off her make-up, took out her earrings, combed her long blonde hair, and then climbed under the covers. It was all still so strange, but Jon was determined to make the most of her exchange year.
Karyn was not having nearly as much fun. She was dressed in an orange jumpsuit, curled up on a hard cot, in a jail cell. She shivered, both from fear and cold, and could only hope that Jon would be able to find a way to help her tomorrow.
