The bell resonated throughout the school. Everything stopped, everywhere in the building, as the students listened, then started off toward classes.
The various cliques merged into the sea of students passing through the hallway, then separated outward in different directions.
Sarah paused in the hallway. She felt her whole being vibrating in tune with the bell. For a second there, she felt...she shrugged it off. She had to get to class.
Tiffany Sanders had a similar feeling. Her mind felt suddenly clear and crisp, which was odd because it was usually filled with thoughts of having sex, sex, and more sex, interspersed with hair, clothes, and other things. It might have been fair to say that Tiffany hadn't been thinking clearly since she hit puberty.
In fact, whatever odd frequency the bell was ringing on, it seemed to be tuned into cheerleaders. The entire cheerleading squad had been unsettled by it.
Karyn nearly ran into Melissa Smith, who blinked suddenly. "Oh, sorry...I sort of stopped there, she said, distracted.
Karyn frowned. Melissa apologizing? She was usually much more likely to claim it wasn't her fault and blame the other person, innocent or not. "Are you all right?"
"I guess," she said. "But...you know, Karyn...you're really pretty," she said.
"Umm...thanks."
Melissa actually seemed embarrassed. "I mean, your outfits...I could help you with that. I know all sorts of things about fashion."
Karyn wasn't sure she liked this, or whether she preferred Melissa treating her like garbage. "Umm...I'll think about it."
"Yeah, well, call me," she hurried off to class.
She hoped that this was the extent of whatever wish Jon had made. One cheerleader suddenly being nice. But when she got to her first class, she discovered the change was not limited to Melissa. To everyone's surprise, Tiffany Sanders, well-known bubblehead, was participating in class and paying attention.
It led Karyn to hope the wish was limited to two nasty cheerleaders.
