When Sarah finally arrived at the school, she met up with her friends Tiffany Sanders and Melissa Smith, two girls who were also on the cheerleading squad with her.
"Hey, girls," Sarah said. "Sorry I'm a little late, but..."
"Oh, thank God," said Melissa, hugging Sarah.
"What -- what's going on?" Sarah noticed the worried expressions on Melissa and Tiffany's faces.
"She must not have noticed," Tiffany said to Melissa.
"Noticed what?" Sarah asked.
"All the guys are gone," Melissa blurted. "So are the adults. And the kids -- it's like there's only high school girls left in the world."
"What?!" exclaimed Sarah. "That's crazy!"
"You didn't notice your parents weren't around this morning?" asked Tiffany.
"No, they usually leave for work before I get up, and --" Sarah put a hand to her mouth. "Oh, my God -- Biff didn't pick me up, and he didn't answer his cell phone, and -- and --" Looking around the front yard of the school, she noticed the usual small groups standing and talking, but she quickly realized that there were no males present, no buses lined up in the school driveway, no flag on the flagpole...
"The building's open, but there's no teachers or anybody," said Melissa.
"I noticed something was weird when my alarm went off this morning and the radio was just static," said Tiffany. "And my mom's car was in the driveway, but she wasn't around."
