Jon was about to turn and leave the room, but paused as a thought came to him. "Uh ... were any of Jon's ... I mean ... Mr. Everett's family or friends coming to see him today?"
"I believe his friend was coming to see him. Why?" the nurse asked.
"No reason. Do you know when his friend is coming?"
"I don't know. I think maybe sometime this morning? You'll have to check the visitor schedule."
"Oh, right," Jon said.
"Susan, are you sure you're alright?" the nurse asked. "You don't seem like yourself."
You have no idea, Jon thought. "I'm fine. Really." Then he left the room. He wanted to avoid more conversation, if it was at all possible.
So, Karyn was coming to see him that day. He supposed he could just stick around and wait for her, but then he'd actually have to act like Nurse Williams. He didn't know the first thing about being a nurse. No, the best thing was for him to get out of there. He could stake out the entrance of the hospital and then approach Karyn when he saw her. She knew about the wishing stone. It would be weird for her, but he was sure that she'd believe him if he told her that he was Jon.
He walked down the hall towards the elevators, stumbling twice on Susan's high heels. They were only three-inch, but being a boy, Jon obviously wasn't used to walking in them.
