Karyn walked back into the room, holding three glasses awkwardly. "Jon, I just talked to your mom. She doesn't even know who Wendi is. I think you better tell me who she really is."
"It's a long story," said Jon. "I can explain... no, no, I really can explain. Basically I decided I didn't want to lose the stone. So I wished the stone would turn into a girl."
"That's weird," said Karyn. "You turned your magic stone into a girl? Why would you do that... oh, I can guess. You're a guy. You have your fantasies about a girl obeying your every command and you turned the stone into this... this... what? What are you, Wendi? Are you a real girl?"
"Of course I'm a girl," replied Wendi.
"But you do what Jon tells you to."
"Of course I do. I grant wishes."
"Look, Karyn," said Jon. "Okay, I'll admit that I probably had a bit of a thought about that but it wasn't the main reason I did it. And I don't know if I'd do anything with Wendi that I'd want to do with a girl anyway. Because she acts weird."
"Weird? I see, sort of."
"She was just standing in the middle of the room for five minutes. She didn't do anything. It's creepy. And whenever I say something is wrong she tells me that if I make a wish I can fix it."
"You can make a wish to fix that too," said Wendi.
"See what I mean?" replied Jon. "Why don't you act like a girl, Wendi?"
"I have been transformed into a girl, so by definition any way I act is acting like a girl. If you mean a typical girl, I don't know how to act like one."
Karyn looked at Wendi and asked "Do you want to act like a typical girl?"
"I don't know. Jon, you should make a wish if you want me to act like a typical girl. You could give me a personality or memories or both."
"He doesn't want to do that!" exclaimed Karyn. "Besides, he would be wiping your own personality and memories. What you have of them, anyway. Do you have any?"
"I like Jon and I want to help him. I am sure that any personality he gives me would include those elements, so I would lose nothing. My memories are about fifteen minutes long and I have done little in that time except grant wishes. Also, Jon hasn't explained my existence."
"What?" replied Jon.
"Your mother didn't remember who I am even though transformations from my magic change reality, which would usually make her remember. That's because even in the new reality, I was transformed recently, although by a spell you read off a scroll rather than by a wish. You don't want to tell people about spells or wishes, so you can't explain my existence. If you change my memories so that I have a history, you could also change reality so that this history seems to have happened. Then you could explain me."
"But I don't have to, right?" replied Jon.
"By no means. There are other ways to explain me, and you don't have to give me memories in order to give me a girl's personality."
"Are you absolutely sure you're okay with this, Wendi?" asked Jon.
"I give you permission to make any changes to me that you wish, including personality and memory. Does that satisfy you?"
"I guess..." said Jon. "And I could still make wishes? You'd still let me?"
"You have wished that I would let you touch me to make wishes. This wish can't be reversed, so no matter what other changes you make to make me like a typical girl, I will always let you touch me to make wishes."
"All right. I wish...."
