Jon and Karyn looked at each other as they joined the throng of students making their way to the gym hall.
“What do you think this is about?” Karyn asked, sounding a little worried. Jon shrugged his shoulders.
“It probably has something to do with everybody acting weirdly today.”
Karyn nodded. She perked up a bit, however, when a couple of girls joined the crowd. “Hi Sarah!” she greeted the girls cheerily. Jon peered around Karyn to see Sarah McMillan and her cronies walking within earshot. They seemed to be a little displeased that Karyn was talking to them.
“How’s Biff?” Karyn asked, noticing that Sarah’s boyfriend wasn’t with them. Sarah scowled.
“Why do you care?”
“Because we’re friends?” Karyn replied, a little confused. “And I know that you and Biff had a little spat this morning in history.”
Sarah stopped in her tracks which caused Tiffany, who hadn’t been paying attention, to bump into her.
“Hey, watch…” Tiffany began but she stopped abruptly when she saw Sarah staring Karyn down.
“Friends!?” Sarah repeated. “Since when have we been friends?”
Karyn looked a little hurt and Jon was beginning to wish that he had brought the stone along with him. He stepped in between the two girls.
“Sarah, just leave it alone, okay?” He suggested. “Everyone’s been acting really weird today, so why don’t we just go along with it and find out what this meeting is about?”
Sarah continued to stare at Karyn for a while longer but eventually relented.
“Fine,” she huffed. “But if she thinks that I’m going to be friends with her, then she’s got another thing coming.”
Before either Jon or Karyn could respond, she stormed off with Tiffany and Amber in tow, leaving Jon and Karyn behind in the slowly quieting hallway.
Karyn, looking as if she was about to cry, looked at Jon.
“What was that all about? I only asked her how Biff was.”
Jon sighed and shook his head.
“I don’t know, Karyn, come on. Let’s get to the gym before we’re late.”
