Jon got back into the car. In a low voice, he said to Karyn "Do you see who that one cop is?"
When she looked out the window, her eyes went wide. "It's the guy from the gas station. The Watcher."
"Yeah."
"What are you gonna do?" Karyn asked.
"The only thing I can do. Drive."
"You're just gonna leave your grandfather here? You know what the Watcher can do."
"I didn't say I was gonna leave him."
Jon backed up the car, while watching the cops smile, as if they had won. Won what? Jon wasn't sure.
After Jon had backed up enough, he hit the gas. But he wasn't aiming for the road. He was aiming for the cop that was the Watcher.
There was just a split second of realization and horror on the man's face before Jon ran him over. It was an odd feeling, running someone over, the thumping noise it made.
The other cops were stunned just long enough for Jon to yell to his grandfather to run. And he did, while several pedestrians were either shocked or screaming from what Jon had just done.
He backed up the car, driving over the Watcher again, and then drove forward down the street, leaving the cops behind. If they even really were cops.
"Jon! I can't believe you just did that!" Karyn yelled, with a combination of excitement and horror.
He couldn't quite believe it himself. Jon had never killed anyone before, but he had a feeling that the one who was the Watcher couldn't be killed quite so easily.
