Jon walked up to one of the buildings. It seemed to be an office building of some kind. The three girls were trailing behind him, talking to each other about something. He reached for the door, thinking it would be locked. But it wasn't. He opened it and walked inside.
The moment he entered the building, people appeared out of nowhere. Busy doing their work, whatever that was.
"Excuse me, can I help you?" a man said, walking up to Jon, giving him a strange look. Jon forgot about his appearance. Walking around in girl's clothes was okay when no one was around, but now that he was among strangers, he suddenly became embarrassed.
"I ... I was just wondering where all the people were," Jon said.
Again, he gave Jon an odd look. "Exactly which people are you talking about?"
Jon turned around and pointed towards the outside street. "The people out th ..." He stopped, stunned. There were people. And cars. It was a normal city scene.
But there was another thing Jon noticed. Karyn, Sarah, and Zoe weren't there.
He turned back to the man. "Where am I?"
"This is 73rd Sreet Financial Bank."
"No, not the building. What city is this?"
Another odd look. "You don't know what city you're in?"
"Humor me."
"You're in Neffiyot City."
"Is that a joke?"
"No."
"There's no such place as Neffiyot City."
"You must have gotten hit on the head. You're confused. Maybe you should go to the hospital and get your head examined."
The man turned away and went to help someone else. Jon turned back to the entrance and noticed a poster advertising the city. Jon looked at the spelling of the city: NEFFIYOT. What a dumb name for city, Jon thought. But then something about it seemed familiar. After some thought, he knew what it was.
It was an anagram. For the word FIFTYONE.
Karyn saw Jon enter the building and then he seemed to disappear inside.
Then they heard it. A deafening BOOM that roared and echoed throughout the city. It was so loud that they had to cover their ears. After the sound dissipated enough, they ran to the office building, but they didn't see Jon. They didn't see anyone at all.
