It wasn't just the vastness of the city that was overwhelming. It was the stature of the buildings and the roads that seemed to stretch to the horizon and beyond. The skyscrapers did indeed seem to touch the sky, or maybe it was just an optical illusion.
There was definitely something missing that was usually in a cityscape: people.
Jon, Karyn, Sarah, and Zoe seemed to be the only ones in a city that could hold at least 15 or 20 million people. It felt normal to be alone in the Place, which was mainly just farmland. But to be alone in a city like this one was just creepy.
In addition to no people, there were also no cars. Except for the one that Jon was driving.
And it was silent. Except for, of course, the car engine.
"Okay, this is creepy," Karyn finally said.
"Yeah. Where is everyone?" Jon replied.
They drove until they found a parking lot, and Jon parked the car.
"Okay, I think we should look around," Jon said.
"Do you think that's wise?" Karyn asked.
"Maybe not. But I want to check this place out. I'm curious." He turned around and looked at Sarah and Zoe in the back seat, then back to Karyn. "You can stay here, if you want."
"No, we'll go too," Zoe said for all three of them.
They got out of the car and left it in the lot.
