After a few minutes, Sarah opened the door and came out. She wore a tight white T-shirt, a short miniskirt, and a pair of heeled shoes, something like what she wore to school.
"Are you sure you want to wear something like that," Jon asked.
"What's wrong with this?"
"Nothing. It's very nice. It's just that we'll be doing a lot of walking and ..."
"Walking? No one said anything about walking. Didn't you have a car or something when you brought me here?"
"We told you, we didn't bring you here," Jon said.
"You should listen to 'em," a voice said, out of nowhere.
"Who was that?" Sarah said, looking in all directions, but not seeing anyone there.
"I think it was the old man," Karyn said.
"Old man? What old man?"
Jon sighed. He'd have to tell his story all over again. But this time, to his enemy and not his friend.
When he was done telling Sarah his story (he left out anything to do with the stone, of course), he looked at his watch. About twenty minutes had passed.
Sarah couldn't believe it. She wouldn't believe it. A sunless sky, disappearing farmers, and a changing road? Ridiculous. And what was more ridiculous than that was the fact that Jon couldn't physically interact with Karyn.
Well, at least it was until they showed her.
Jon's arm passed through Karyn's, as if either one weren't there.
Sarah was shocked. And for real this time. She tried to touch Jon's arm and she actually did it. Then she tried to do it to Karyn. And that worked too.
"I don't get it. How come I can interact with you two?"
Jon really didn't know the answer to that. But at least they convinced Sarah that there was definitely something strange going on.
