Jon sprinted towards Yukio, then asked her "Can I ... come?"
"Uh, I guess so," Yukio said.
They didn't talk the rest of the way to Karyn's house. For Jon, it was because he didn't want to hear his broken English again. It was frustrating when he couldn't say what he wanted to. And for Yukio, it was because of uneasiness. She wasn't sure why Jon wanted to come with her to see Karyn. He never wanted to before. Why did he suddenly want to now?
A few minutes later, Yukio and Jon were standing on Karyn's front porch. Yukio rang the doorbell and a moment later, the door opened.
"Hi, Karyn," Yukio said.
"Hi, Yukio. Uh, what's he doing here?" Karyn asked.
"He wanted to come with. I didn't want to make him upset, so I told him he could come."
Make me upset? Jon thought. What am I? A child?
"Well, I was hoping only you were coming." Karyn sighed. "I guess he can come in. But only for a few minutes." She turned to Jon. "Do ... you ... understand?" she asked slowly.
Jon suddenly felt offended. Of course he understood. He wasn't an invalid. "Yes," he said, simply.
Karyn let them in.
