While standing in line to get food, Kyla said "Jon? Is there something wrong?"
"No."
"Ever since last night at the mall, you've seemed distant."
"I said I was depressed."
"Depressed about what?" she asked.
"Nothing. It's not important."
Kyla didn't ask further, but still seemed concerned.
They both got their food and walked to their table. Before Jon sat down, he took a quick glance around the room. By the "popular crowd" tables, he saw Biff making out with Tiffany. At one of the geek tables, he saw Sarah snorting with laughter along with the other geeks. And at the back of the room, he saw the "new" gothic Karyn eating with ... four other Goths? There was Sabrina, Stephanie, Trevor Blake, and someone who he thought was the original Zoe's friend Athena. There were so many Goths at the table that from far away it looked like a large black mass. For some reason, Goth Karyn had a lot more friends than Goth Zoe, Goth Kyla, and Goth Sarah.
He looked around for Zoe, but didn't see her. He guessed that maybe she went to the first period lunch instead.
"Are you looking for someone?" Kyla asked.
"Huh?" Jon asked, looking down at Kyla, who was already seated. "No. No one in particular." Jon took a seat himself and began to eat.
