For a time, Jon actually considered heading to Karyn's house. But he had too much homework to get done and he figured that now would be the best time to do it, when his mom wasn't around.
And as it turned out, his mom was gone quite a while. She didn't get back from her shopping trip (and whatever else she was doing with those two young ditzy women) until after eleven o'clock at night.
Jon was still up and heard her coming up the stairs. He opened his bedroom door to confront her about coming back so late, but he immediately regretted doing that.
"Where the hell were you? Do you know what time it is?" Jon asked her. He paused, realizing that he was using a concerned parent's tone of voice ... for someone who was about three times his age.
"Hey, I'm an adult," his mom said. "I can do whatever the hell I want. And you can't talk to me like that. You're supposed to respect me."
"Respect a bitch like you?" Jon asked. He suddenly wanted to take it back. It was exactly how he felt, but he wasn't sure if he should have told her.
She gasped, then turned angry. "Who the hell do you think you are?!" She was loud enough to grab the attentions of Jon's dad and sister. They came out of their bedrooms.
Jon realized that maybe he should have just stayed in his room.
