Jon woke up in the morning to the sound of his alarm clock. Yawning as he got up, he wondered whether the ring had worked. He knew, needless to say, that wishes were wishes and he had specifically asked the ring to work like he had wanted, but there was still a little bit of doubt in the back of his head. Besides, he hadn't been exact about every single detail so he certainly could be surprised.

He considered what it would mean for an object to get pregnant and wondered if his computer would really have a pregnancy bulge in it. He hadn't considered that. The computer, however, looked perfectly normal. When he touched the keyboard, the screen lit up, but the cursor showed it was processing... something. The light on the DVD drive was flashing and wouldn't stop. He had obviously done something to the computer, but he wasn't exactly sure what. Jon decided to go to school and try later.

On the way home after a day of imagining little robots messing up his room, Jon was talking to Karyn.

"So you decided to use the ring," said Karyn.

"Of course," replied Jon. "I wouldn't have made a magic item if I wasn't going to use it."

"But that's weird," said Karyn. "Besides, how do you end it? You can't just throw away children when you're done with them."

"I'll deal with that when it becomes a problem," replied Jon. "Anyway, come on, we can see how it worked."

"I can't believe I'm going to do this," said Karyn, "but sure. It's too late for me to discourage you anyway."

Jon went home, Karyn coming with him. When he arrived, nobody else was home yet and the room looked normal. He touched the computer's keyboard again and was greeted by the same useless screen. The drive was no longer flashing, however.

"Is that it?" asked Karyn. "Disappointing, right?"

"I don't know," said Jon. "It's different than before. The drive isn't lit any more. Wait a minute...." Jon pressed the eject button. The drive opened and seemed to warp, twisting and expanding. Something huge was ejected that was much bigger than the drive in its normal condition, bowling Jon over. Jon was on the floor and being crushed. Or someone was on top of him, anyway.

"Uhh, let me get her aside," said Karyn.

"Hm?" replied Jon. "Oh..." He could see that while what he had gotten wouldn't normally fit inside a computer, it was perfectly normal size for what it appeared to be: a naked girl around Jon's age. She also seemed to be dead, or at least cold and unmoving.

"Is that what you wanted?" asked Karyn. "Look at her face. She really does look like your daughter."

"Yeah," said Jon. "Now I need an extension cord. I used the ring to impregnate a machine so I can have an android, remember?"

"You have to keep your daughter plugged in at all times?" said Karyn. "I hope not. That would be an awful way to live."

"No," said Jon. "Plugging her in is like eating. Feed her enough electricity and it lasts until she gets hungry."

"Can she eat real food when she's hungry? Does she eat metal? How much have you thought this out?"

"She can survive by eating food but she has to be on in order to eat so if she completely runs out of power we still have to plug her in. No, she doesn't eat metal because that's stupid. And that's about as far as I've thought it out." Jon walked over to his closet and dug around in a box. He pulled out an orange extension cord about three meters long. Jon plugged one end into the wall and the other into a hole on the girl's back.

"Nothing's happening," said Karyn.

"Hold on," said Jon. He pressed the girl's belly button--which must have been the on switch--and her eyes began to open....
