Susan Madison, freshman, and sister to Jon Madison, walked down the hall. Her brother had been acting odd since yesterday, but that wasn't really on her mind. It was more on Coach Barry's offer, and the fact they wanted her as a cheerleader, even if it was Junior Varsity...it could lead to being Head Cheerleader someday, like Linda.
Lucy DeVries hurried up next to her. "I heard you're trying out for cheerleading," she said. "I thought you were going to try out for track with me...we were going to practice together."
"Coach Barry said I'd be a shoo-in for cheerleading," she said. "The whole squad thinks so."
"Cheerleaders care more about being cheerleaders than competing..." Lucy said.
"You're just jealous," Susan said. Linda said that everyone would be jealous.
"Am not," Lucy said.
"What are you two fighting about?" Another girl asked, joining them.
"Nothing," Susan said to her friends. "I have to get to class," she said, turning.
Not far away, Linda watched and smiled. Their new recruit was hooked. Linda didn't know that the day before she'd been a devoted mother of three. The current Linda wasn't in the least bit maternal...more concerned with shallow pursuits...her boyfriend, the squad, how she looked, the legacy of being raised the pampered daughter of a wealthy family. Jon's wish would be an interesting study of nature and nurture if anyone was capable of studying it.
