For a moment I fell through the air, unable to do anything. The wind whistled through my hair; the trees drawing closer. But, almost instinctively, I found my wings unfolding halfway to make a sort of parachute. I suddenly jerked up in the air, and my deadly tumble became a gentle glide.
The jerk snapped me back to my senses, and with a few flaps I was able to rise up to Karyn's height again. And I was able to the building I lived in for the first time.
The thing was huge! I thought my room was high, but it was only about halfway up. I couldn't really make it out, but it looked like the building had a flat top.
I also couldn't see around the building, because it was so wide. I'm not kidding, the side I'd just jumped out of was probably half a mile long! Even though I couldn't see the other sides, some how I knew that it was a heptagonal prism, a prism with a seven sided base. I don how I knew that, it just seemed right for things to be in sevens.
It was amazing that we as a human race could build something so huge, but the evidence was right in front of my eyes. Turning my attention away from the apartment complex (since I was guessing that was what it was), I used a couple more powerful flaps to bring myself closer to Karyn.
Of course, as soon as I got close, she giggled and flew another five feet away. I was able to close the gap pretty quickly, but before I could even get close she was winging away again.
Everytime I would get close, she would duck out of my way again, usually with a giggle, and more often then not with a sly, seductive wink that infuriated me even more. She was a much more advanced flyer than I was, doing pirouettes and flips that when I tried to replicate almost made me fall.
Finally, through shear luck, I was able to zoom in close while she was in the middle of her aerial acrobatics and grab her around the waist. Using my larger and more powerful wings, I was able to make her flap in tandem, so when my wigs went forward hers went back and vice versa. I thought she might try to struggle, just for playfulness sake, but instead she folded her body into mine, wrapping her arms around my neck, wrapping her legs around my waist, and resting her head on my chest. Her sigh of content was the best sound in the world.
I don't know how look we hovered there, although I would have happily had it last for hours, but unfortunately we were pulled back to reality by the familiar voice of my sister.
"Hey lovebirds! What are you doing?" Zoe asked, winging over to us, laughing.
Karyn pulled away from me and hovered over to Zoe. "Just going for a flight. Why do you ask?"
"Oh really? A flight? It didn't look like you were going anywhere to me." Karyn blushed, and I grinned sheepishly, but it didn't seem like Zoe cared to much. It was kind of nice to see her without a thick coating of black makeup on her face. It was pretty sad that I'd forgotten that her actual hair color was a light brown, same as mine. "I was just heading out to see a movie with some friends, and when I saw you guys I thought you two might want to join me."
"Sound like fun. What's showing?"
"There's that new Indiana Jones movie. It's like, the Palace of time or something like that. I mean, I know you love those movies, Jon, so you know..."
It's true, I did love the Indiana Jones movies. Well, the first three. The Crystal Skull was kind of bad, 'cause Harrison Ford is getting old for action movies. But it was nice to know they still existed now, although some parts of them would have to have really changed to accommodate our flying ability.
"Yeah I'd like to go. At least, if you want to go Karyn."
"Oh defiantly. I like Indiana Jones almost as much as you," she said with a wink. I'm not quite certain what that was for, but I didn't question it.
"Well if we are going we'd better go now. The movie starts in about 15 minutes, so we have just enough time to get there if we hurry."
