The girl scouts, including Michele, looked into the store, but did not find as much as they hoped on google.
Within a few days after school ended, both of Mikey's parents got a promotion and bonus at their jobs. To celebrate, they decided to do what the kids asked and go to Greece. It would be the last family vacation before Jon went off to college. Mikey was ecstatic that they were going. He promised to get Davis a book in Greek, any book. Henry wanted Greek fisherman's cap. Krista wanted a recipe for a Greek dish. Diane wanted a rock from somewhere in Greece. Vicky and Heather didn't asked for anything and hoped he had a great trip and learned more about the necklace.
The flight over was uneventful. The first couple days, the family explore Athens, saw the Acropolis, ate delicious food and enjoyed the sunny beaches. The airBNB was perfect, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms within walking distance of the water. Jon used his fluent Greek to chat with the locals at the restaurants and beach. He even got them some discounts and recommendations to some off the beaten path locations and local haunts. It was a good think Jon spoke like 10 languages. One day, Mikey would have to ask Jon his trick.
Mikey left the necklace on the whole time they were in Athens. The family took a private guided day trip from Athens to Delphi. A Greek gentleman drove the family up to Delphi, talking about the history of the country, current exports and local customs. Mikey didn't hear much, since he was thinking about what to do when they got there. He did enjoy the countryside though. The tour-guide walked them through the ancient site. After the tour, he told the family where and when he would meet them, allowing them a few hours to explore the city. After going into one museum as a family, Mikey and Jon were let loose and told to meet up at a restaurant for an early dinner and pick up. Mikey's parents walked off hand in hand. Zoe wandered off in what seemed like a random direction
Jon and Mikey went into a few shops together. There was small talk about the trip so far, college plans and then Mikey asked Jon for some help. Mikey told Jon that the necklace that he got from Krista came from this town. Jon offered to help do some research. Jon and Mikey got some Kolokithopita and started to try to track down a shop with an old man that sold small knick-knacks. Somehow, people just opened up to Jon when he spoke Greek. After not even an hour, Jon had a lead, and about 6 girl's phone numbers.
Mikey and Jon walked into the musty smelling store through an open door. An old man was behind the counter, fanning himself and watching soccer on a small TV. The store was narrow enough that the brothers couldn't walk side by side. The stuff was more small antiques than knick knacks. They weren't little plastic things, but old wooden toys, postcards form the 1970s and even some from the 1960s. There were some rolled up posters. There was a small jewelry section. Jon went up to the the gentleman and started chatting while Mikey took a few extra moments to wander and explore the store, wondering if there was magic in any of the other items here. Jon called Mikey over and pointed out the necklace. The man's eye's widened, and a large smile came to his face. He spoke in rapid Greek to Jon, with the occasional finger pointing to Mikey's neck. Jon asked some questions and then excused himself to talk with his brother.
"Mikey, you have some piece there. Yiannis here said he got the the necklace after praying to Apollo and the gods back in 1960s because he wanted to help the family business. Back then, she was called Yannis. She was the firstborn, but looked over because she was a girl. The necklace just showed up in her room one day, and when she put it on, she became a he. The first wearing, she just felt she knew how to use it. While wearing it, she was the heir to the business, which was dealing with antiques for shops like this one in all of Greece, and was starting to expand into other countries. She would wear the necklace during the day, then take it off at night. Eventually, in university, she left it on for the 24 hours and stayed Yiannis, as he was in a serious relationship and they wanted to get married. Yiannis took over the family business, and made it a multinational supplier of Greek antiquities. Eventually, he retired to a simple life here with his wife and started this shop. His wife died a few years ago, and the necklace reminded him of her. He sold it to an American woman, who happened to be the first person interested in the piece. He's glad she didn't keep it, because he didn't like her very much. He said the necklace turns you into the opposite gender when you wear it, but if you wear it for more that 24 hours you will stay the opposite gender. The beads are indestructible, but not the band. The beads can be removed from the band and put on another leather band and have the same effect. If the female you gets pregnant, the pregnancy gets 'paused' when you are in your male form. If you deliver the baby, you stay a woman. If you don't use the necklace for a year, you forget it exists, except for Yiannis who said since he used it first, he will always remember. He hopes you use it in good health and good luck. Anything else you want to ask the guy?"
"No, thanks for talking to him Jon." replied Mikey
Jon turned back to Yiannis and spoke a little more. The two shook hands and Yiannis gave a couple things to Jon, a business card with a cell number on it, and a ring.
"What's the ring?" asked Mikey as they walked out of the store waving at their new friend
"It's a ring with a marble inset that he thought would look nice for me"
"No magic?"
"None, he said the necklace was the only thing he ever found that did anything magical. What's the real story about that necklace? You've had it for years."
"....Well, when I first went to the girl scouts, Krista gave it to me to wear so I would fit in. On our first weekend camping trip, I left it on for 24 hours by accident. I share it with the girl scouts, so sometimes I'm Mikey and sometimes I'm Michele."
"That answers my question."
"We found that people that don't see the change don't know about the change. Currently, only the girl scouts know, and Karyn."
"She has been teasing me about that on and off for years. Well, Mikey, I won't tell anyone. I just want to borrow it sometime, or maybe get one of my own with those beads."
"You can use it."
"What do you think about using it tonight?" asked Jon
