They got to the room. They couldn't believe it, but there was no one there. No one guarding the device, which they saw was connected to a bunch of wires and machinery, presumably connected to the antenna on top of the building. Up near the ceiling was a speaker that had the high-pitched sounding signal playing on it.
Sarah pushed her way past Jay and went to the device.
"Shut it off," Jay said, to no one in particular. Meagan walked over to the machinery and tried to find the OFF switch, but couldn't. Maybe there wasn't one.
"Maybe I should just change the signal. You know, to REVERSE or something," Sarah suggested.
"Okay," Jay said. But as Sarah was about to change the setting on the device, Jay stopped her.
"What is it?" she asked.
"If you change everyone back, then that means you get changed back too."
Sarah hadn't thought about that. She liked the way she was now and didn't want to go back to being a bratty bitch. The other girls felt the same way.
"What if ..." Jay started to say.
"What, Jay?"
"What if you don't love me anymore?"
She hadn't thought of that either. She did love Jay, but if she got her old personality back, she knew that she'd hate Jay and people like him. She didn't want that to happen either.
"I don't know," she said. "But if we don't do this, everyone will be forced to be geeks against their will."
Jay supposed that she was right. It's just that he hoped that there was a different way.
Sarah scrolled through the list of personalities on the device's view screen.
