About six or seven minutes later, Jay showed up at the front door, personality device in hand. Sarah let him in and thanked him for coming. She led him into the living room, where her parents were waiting.
She had explained to her parents, during the six or seven minute wait, that when Jay arrived, she would be able to explain everything.
"Here's your explaination," she said, gesturing to the device that Jay held.
"What is it?" her mom asked.
"It's a personality manipulator," Jay explained.
"A what?" Sarah's dad said.
"It changes the personality of the person that it targets. Right now, it's set to GEEK."
"You're making this up," Sarah's mom said. "There's no such thing."
"Perhaps you would like a demonstration?"
"Go ahead. It's not real. I'm getting tired of this game, anyway." Now she was fully convinced that this was all some sort of a joke. Let them play it out to the end, if they want, she thought.
What she didn't understand, though, was that this wasn't a joke or a game. The personality device was real. And after Jay used it on her, she'd find out first hand.
After the high-pitched noise stopped, Sarah's mother looked down at herself through thick glasses and nearly passed out. The sexy sundress that she wore was gone, replaced by a frumpy conservative blouse and long beige skirt.
Her husband gasped.
She jumped up off the sofa and ran to a mirror, where she got another horrible shock. Her hair wasn't perfect anymore. Now it was matted and greasy looking. She wore no make-up and ... and she had buck teeth. She was ugly!
She ran back to the living room. "Change me back!"
"Um, no," Jay said.
Sarah's dad stood up. "Change her back," he said firmly.
"Mother, it's okay. You'll see. You'll like being a geek."
Her mom collapsed onto the couch and began to cry.
Her dad grabbed Jay's arm. "Change her back. Now!"
