Meanwhile, Jon, Karyn, and Meagan walked up to the entrance to the book store. It was a Barnes & Noble. Jon said that he'd wait outside. He didn't want to take the device into the store with him. Karyn and Meagan said it was okay and that they'd meet him outside in a half an hour or so.
After the two girls went inside the store, Jon took a seat on one of the benches in the middle of the mall walkway and waited.
Inside, Karyn's eyes lit up when she saw all the books. Karyn was into reading before, but mostly fiction. Now, she was only really interested in non-fiction. She wanted to know and learn. She also found that she was looking forward to doing her homework when she got home.
Meagan found the science section and spent the next thirty minutes engulfed in one of the chemistry books. She had always believed that chemistry, like all the other sciences, were stupid and a waste of time. But now, she was immensely fascinated by it. She got a thrill out of it, and she liked that.
"Meagan Graison?" a girl's voice asked. Meagan looked up from her book. It was Kyla Leeson, a thin nerdy girl that she knew from school. Meagan remembered making fun of her on more than one occasion. Now, she regreted that behavior.
"Yes?"
"It is you, isn't it? You look so different. If I didn't know better, I'd think that you were a ..." she hesitated, thinking she'd get scorned for what she was about to say. But she continued anyway. "A geek."
"I am a geek. Now."
"What happened?"
Kyla listened as Meagan told the story of how she went from being Popular Cheerleader Meagan to Chemistry Geek Meagan.
