Jon, Karyn, and Jay were close enough to the road that passing drivers could pull over and talk to them if they wanted to. And that's exactly what happened.
One of the last people Karyn wanted to see at that moment drove her convertible over to the side of the road. It was Sarah McMillan, with three of her friends: Melissa Richards, Meagan Graison, and Ashley Thompson. All four were cheerleaders and all four regularly picked on Jon and Karyn. Now they had a reason to pick on them even more.
"Hey, check out the losers," Sarah said to her friends and they all laughed. Then she turned towards Jon, Karyn, and Jay. "Is this a little experiment of yours? To see how low you can get on the social ladder? Or were you always geeks?"
Karyn wanted to yell "What's wrong with being a geek?" But she held her tongue. She wasn't going to give in so easily. She knew who she was supposed to be. If only she hung on to that, perhaps her new geek self wouldn't be so dominant.
"They weren't always geeks. But they are now," Jay said.
"What do you mean by now?" Sarah asked.
Jay smiled. "I'll show you."
