After going through all the settings, Sarah settled on the same one. In a way she'd be doing Jon a favor, but Sarah, while she seldom showed it, had enough brains to know exactly why the device wouldn't do what Karyn and Jon thought it does.

"Whoa," said Jon as he transformed. The device didn't change his physical body, so he didn't suddenly grow muscles, but still, he felt awfully confused.

"Ta ta," said Sarah, running off. "I think I'll have some fun with this thing."

Jon stuck his hand in his pocket and fingered the stone, which Sarah didn't know about. "I wish Sarah would accidentally drop my device and not notice she did it."

It was child's play to pick up the device again. "Well, that's that," said Jon. "We'd better get home and work on that homework again."

"I don't feel like it," said Karyn.

"Me neither. Isn't there supposed to be a party at Nicole's place tonight?"

"That'll be cool," said Karyn. "Let's go! I can't wait...."

At the party, Karyn was busy trying to gossip with Melissa Richards, one of Sarah's friends. The conversation, such as it went, was a little bit one-sided.

"But I want to hear about who Ashley is dating, Melissa!"

"Maybe you do," she replied. "What does it feel like to want something?"

"Don't be a bitch. Geez, haven't you noticed I have better dress sense? I want to be one of you."

"Nobody could be one of us, dweeb."

Karyn slapped Melissa's face, and the brawl only ended when Jon pulled Karyn away.

"Dammit," said Jon, "I just came here to have fun! Fun, fun, fun... Biff Meadows thr-- tried to punch me! If I hadn't shuddenly remembered my karate, I couldn't even defend myshelf. So I insulted his mother. Ha, ha, Biff's mother... And he was gonna mesh up my facsh..."

"You should wish yourself back to sober," said Karyn. "Here, let me." She reached into Jon's pocket against his will and made the wish.

Jon didn't even fight back and just said "Yer real cute, Karyn... get closher..."

"Now," said Karyn, "what's this about getting punched?"

"It sucks! I mean, him and his friends talk like that with each other all the time! They may get mad, but not that mad. Just me..."

Over on the side, Sarah, who had watched everything, was laughing. Too bad she lost the device, but it was still amusing. Of course, just like not every geek is a friend of every other geek, not every popular person was a friend of every other one. It doesn't matter what Karyn and Jon's personality was, Sarah's friends didn't know them as friends, so they weren't friends. At worst, they would be rivals. At best, they would be like someone coming from another school who thinks like a popular person, but has no connection to the 'in' crowd....
