Karyn walked down the hall with her hands in the small pockets. She thought she had it all figured it out. And when she felt that way, she was usually right. She knocked on Michele's doorjam and saw her sitting on her big, staring at mirror on her desk.
"So Michele, or maybe Mitchell, want to talk?" asked Karyn.
"Karyn, I don't want to talk about it."
"Listen Monroe, I know a few things about body changes. I've been through a few myself." Karyn said, pointing at her relatively new assets on her chest.
"You are supposed to have those."
Karyn stepped into the room and closed the door softly.
"Listen Max, I think you have gone through something that not many people understand. Heck, I wouldn't have thought it could happen til a couple weeks ago.":
"Why do you say that?"
"I saw that magic is real and sometimes wishes come true, Michael."
Michele turned her head and looked at Karyn
"The necklace turned me into a girl, and now I can only be a boy if I wear it."
Karyn gave herself a mental high-five.
"Listen Michael"
"Mikey, you call me Mikey when I'm a boy."
"Mikey, when you are a girl, you look...sad. I just want you to know that being a girl isn't all bad. There are a lot of good things, mostly good things in fact.:
Michele turned her body to Karyn and pulled her legs to her chest. She was listening intensely. Karyn knew her next few sentences had to be good, maybe great.
"Mikey, as a girl, you can do all the good things you can do as a boy. We live in the 21st century. You can get a college education, drive a racecar, play professional sports and marry whoever you want, depending on your state. And you can do it while looking as cute as you want. You also get something that no other girl or boy has, a clear view of what the other gender lives. You will get to have the best of both worlds. Mikey, you have been given a gift."
Michele looked at Karyn for a minute, then two. Finally she said
"Karyn, thanks. I have been thinking about my girl life and my boy life and they have fun parts. I guess I can do the fun parts of both."
"That's right, Michele."
For the first time, Karyn didn't see her jump saying that name.
"And if you need any girl talk, you know where I am. Here is my number if you need it. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. You can tell your friends and family whenever you want, if you want." And with that Karyn opened the door and winked at Michele on the way out.
"She's so smart. I was thinking that being a girl had good parts. She's right, I can do what I want, as long as I have the necklace."
The moment she finished the thought, her mom yelled up the stairs.
"Michele, your friend Diane is here! Come down and say hi."
Michele sat bolt upright in bed. She had forgotten all about meeting up and going for a bike ride. She put on some sneakers and ran down the stairs, through the first floor and gave to the front door.
"Hey Diane!" waved Michele, "let's go!"
"Hey Mi...chele. I'm ready when you are."
"Bye mom!"
"Michele, come back in about 45 minutes for dinner and be safe." she yelled after her daughter.
Michele grabbed her bike from the garage through the side door, put on her red helmet and the two hit the road
