Wait a minute, thought Jon. He had wished that when Karyn or myself fires the gun we can see through the normalness it creates. He made that wish right after the other one. So if it's fired at Karyn, she should remember...
Remember what? What was it, anyway?
Wait a minute again. The normalizer ray. He knew that he had accidentally set it off. And when he had looked at Karyn, he had noticed something, and then forgot, but then since he forgot he didn't remember what it was he forgot.
"Karyn," he explained, "the normalizer ray. I hit you with it by accident. You don't remember what it did to you."
"So what did it do to me?"
"I don't remember either!" replied Jon. "I thought I noticed something but I forgot it. If I hadn't realized that I fired the ray I would have completely dismissed it."
"But you wished that we'd remember."
"It was a second wish. It would have reversed the first wish. Besides, it should treat us the same. Either the wish works and we both remember, or it doesn't work because it's reversing a wish, and we both forget. It shouldn't be possible to have one person remember and one person forget."
"Then how do I find out? Maybe I didn't get big breasts and short hair from wishing to be like Sarah. Maybe I just thought I did but I really traded with someone who had big breasts and short hair."
"I think I figured it out," said Jon. "Sarah doesn't have short hair. So how could you have gotten short hair by wishing to have Sarah's hair and breasts? You started with hair that's short for a girl but not a crew cut, then you wished to be like Sarah. That must have given you long hair, not short hair. So you got the short hair because it was swapped and normalized, even though we don't remember it."
"That's strange," said Karyn. "But you know it doesn't matter much. If that's what happened, it didn't change memories for my whole life. It only changed my memories up to yesterday."
"Because that's how your hair became 'normal'. Most things don't change suddenly like hair you get from wishes. If you traded your breasts with someone the only way for her breasts to be normal is to remember having grown them. She would remember it being that way back to the start of puberty. Anyway, I messed up the normalizer but we can still use it. It only works on memories, it doesn't affect anything else. So you can swap the breasts with someone with smaller breasts, then write down "I'm normalizing breasts", then use the normalizer and read the paper to find out what you did."
"Hmm, can I try it? I'm sure someone has smaller breasts around here."
Jon agreed and gave Karyn the devices. She rummaged in her purse for a pencil and paper, then wrote something down. But instead of looking around for someone with small breasts, she first aimed it at Jon. One zap each of both devices later, she looked around confused.
"Did you use those?" said Jon. "You had those aimed at me."
"Yeah. I was going to try it on you first, just a prank, but I don't remember what I did to you. I swapped you with someone, but what did I swap? I guess I can read this paper."
Karyn opened the paper and read what she had written down, then looked at Jon. Really? she thought. Had she really swapped Jon's....
