"Don't you remember anything?"
"What are you talking about?" Sharon asked.
"About this?" Jon held up the broken merger device.
Sharon took it and looked at it. "I do remember something about this."
"What?"
"Something about ... change."
"Yes, yes. That's right."
"I was panicking."
"Yes."
"Why was I panicking?"
"Because you were going to merge into another person, to become a new person."
"A new person?"
"Yeah. And it worked."
Sharon thought hard. Really hard. And a moment later, her eyes went wide. "I'm Stephanie and Karyn. Right?"
"Exactly. I'm gonna have to fix that device. But the only way I can do it is with ..."
"The stone?" Sharon finished his sentence.
"Right. But it's at home. Do you think you can sneak me out of here? I'm not the type of person to skip school."
"Sure."
They left the classroom and navigated their way to one of the exits and left.
