A string of melodic tones filled the room, interrupting the brainstorming session Karyn and Jon were having on his little 'problem.' Jon grumbled as he pulled out his cell phone, then quirked an eyebrow at the unfamiliar phone number on the display.
He flipped the phone open and tentatively began, "Uh, hello?"
Adam pulled his phone from his ear and double-checked to make sure he hadn't called the wrong person. Seeing his girlfriend's name on the call display, he quickly put the phone back on his ear and spoke.
"Hi. Um, is Jen there?"
Jon made a confused face, and Karyn raised an eyebrow in silent inquiry. He just shrugged, then responded, "Sorry, I think you have the wrong number."
"Ha ha, very funny. Now would you put Jen on?" Adam said, slightly annoyed at the delay in sharing the good news with his girlfriend.
"Uhm, sorry man. I have no idea who you're talking about. I think you better check that number again." Jon answered truthfully, wondering what the deal was.
Adam rolled his eyes in frustration then insisted, "I think I know my girlfriend's phone number. Who are you, anyway?"
Jon simply sighed and said, "Whatever. I don't have time for this," before flipping his phone back closed and turning back to Karyn, who was still curious. "Just some idiot," he offered, and she nodded knowingly. He tossed his phone onto his bed by Karyn as he settled back in his chair to ponder his very existence.
Still, Adam wasn't about to be put off that easily and, dialing in the number manually this time, called again. Karyn glanced down at the once-again ringing phone oand called out the number. Jon groaned, "It's him again. You can deal with him if you want to. I don't care."
"It's probably just a misunderstanding," Karyn reassured him as she picked up the phone herself. "Hello?"
Adam lurched forward, glad to hear a familiar voice. "Karyn! Thank god it's you. Some wise-guy answered the phone earlier. Is Jen there?"
Her eyes widened suddenly, and she glanced up at Jon, who was staring up at the ceiling idly. "Uhh, I think she's um... ah... not here."
"Huh? Where did she go? Did she forget her phone?" Adam asked, a bit surprised that his girlfriend would leave her phone lying around.
Jon's suddenly intent gaze, caused by his confusion over Karyn's response to the annoying stranger, only added to her anxiety as she looked around the room in a bit of a panic. Her eyes settled on the slightly ajar door to Jon's shared bathroom. "Err... yeah! She just went into the bathroom! Uhh... I think she's going to take a while though... so... yeah. I can take a message?"
"Oh. Well, I guess... Can you tell her to call me back? Like, as soon as she can?" At this point, Adam was beginning to wonder if the Fates had decided he just wasn't meant to talk to his girlfriend tonight. If he only knew...
"Sure, sure. As soon as she gets out, okay," Karyn answered, much relieved that he took the bait. That bought them a little bit of time.
"Right. By the way... who was that guy who answered before?" He didn't sound too happy. Erk.
"M-my cousin. He's just not feeling well at the moment." She desperately hoped her alter-ego hadn't mentioned to him that she didn't have any cousins.
"Hm. Okay... well anyway. It was nice hearing from you, Karyn. See you 'round."
"Bye!" Karyn slapped the phone closed, letting out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding.
Jon was anxious from sitting on the sidelines hearing a conversation that he hadn't at all expected, so he immediately pressed her, "What's going on? Who was that?"
He didn't expect the response he got though. Karyn eyed him with a dead serious look and enunciated solemnly, "Well, Jen. I think that was your boyfriend."
