Back at the Gibson household, Jon was sitting at the desk in his room working on his homework. The math equation that Mr. Henderson had given them was really bugging him. Maybe Karyn would know?
Karyn had always been better at math than Jon, a fact that she liked to rub in his face from time to time. Jon preferred to focus on other subjects, like history or science. You could say that he was a bit of a nerd. He wasn’t like the stereotypical nerds, bottom of the social chain and top his class. Jon was just...average.
Sighing, and putting his pen down Jon picked up his phone and called Karyn. After a few moments, she answered.
“Hey Jon-boy, what’s up?”
“Not much, just doing the homework that Mr. Henderson gave us in class.”
“I see...” There was a somewhat condescending tone in Karyn’s voice as she replied. Like she knew that he was struggling. “What part are you stuck on?”
Jon told her and Karyn couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Come on, Jon. That’s easy. You’d know the answer if you actually paid attention in class.”
Jon groaned. “I know, I know. Can you tell me? Please? I want to get this done so that I can watch the new episode of Star Trek tonight.”
After a bit more teasing, Karyn relented and finally told him.
“Thanks, Karyn. You’re a lifesaver.” Jon quickly wrote down the answer.
“One of these days, Jon, you’re going to have to work it out yourself. I won’t always be around to help you.”
Jon was just about to agree with her—somewhat reluctantly—when suddenly, there was a blinding flash.
When his vision started to return, Jon blinked a few times and looked around. He was still on the phone to Karyn.
“So come on, Jaryn. What’s the answer?”
Jon blinked.
“Karyn, did you see a flash?” Jon asked.
“No, and who’s Karyn? I’m Konathan. Remember?”
“Konathan?” Jon repeated. He suddenly thought back to his wish. “Uh-oh. Karyn, I think that we have a problem.”
